Week 2 in Review!

Week 2 has come and gone and VFTWC is ready to delve into all the going-on’s from last week. Views From The Water Cooler had a record of 64-12 in week 2, which could be considered impressive but it was cupcake weekend this past weekend so 12 losses isn’t too terrible. There are lots of story lines from the past week that have caught headlines and turned heads. Lets get in to week 2 of CFB!

Conference Breakdown

American: The American conference was horrible this past weekend. There’s no other way to say it honestly. The AAC went 2-7, with the two wins being not impressive at all. UCONN barley squeaked by Stony Brook, and Houston blew the doors off of Grambling State. The 7 losses the American were to the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Conference USA, FBS Independent, Pac 12, and SEC. How many times do see one conference loss to all 5 “power conferences” in one weekend? In an interesting note, Cincinnati is the only team to not start their season yet. The American isn’t a strong conference, as we all know, but they need to perform better against the top tier teams in order to gain respect.

ACC: The ACC had a statement weekend this past weekend thanks to Virginia Tech.. Once you get past the Hookies win over Ohio State, the conference had a great win vs. cupcakes. The only loss in the ACC came on a conference game (Pitt over BC). Every win, besides the UNC game, was a blowout and a boring game. This was just another example of a power conference flexing their muscles over weaker opponents.

Big 12: The Big 12’s weekend can be summed up in three statements: Cupcake blowouts, a conference battle, and what the hell is wrong with Texas? The Big 12 went 7-2 this past weekend with one loss coming in conference (Kansas State over Iowa State), and the other loss coming at the hands of BYU over Texas. Last year BYU came out and smacked Texas in the mouth, running for 550 yards and scoring 40 points. All the talk this past week was how Texas was ready for revenge. Clearly this wasn’t the case as Texas just didn’t show up and lost 41-7. We all knew it was going to take time for Texas to rebuild, but with embarrassing performances like this one, it will take even longer. As for the rest of the conference? Delicious and sweet cupcakes.

Big Ten: Well here we go again. Nothing is certain but death, taxes, and people saying the Big Ten conference isn’t a power conference. Yes, the conference lost all their big games this weekend, lost 2 games to the MAC, and barely got by McNeese State, but I’m not ready to jump ship yet. The conference went 8-5 on Saturday (Indiana had a bye) and looked horrible doing it. The top teams did lose, but Michigan State will definitely bounce, Ohio State played terrible and barely lost to VT (a late interception made the score look worse than it was), and Michigan outgained Notre Dame even though they got destroyed. So before we all jump off of the Big Ten bandwagon for good, let them play. Just because they had a bad weekend doesn’t mean that they won’t make the playoff.

Conference USA, MAC, MW, Sun Belt: The only reason I’m lumping all these conferences together is because they ran into the power conferences. These poor conferences went 18-28 overall this past weekend. There were definitely some high points, including 2 MAC wins over the Big Ten, but overall it was an ugly weekends for these conferences. Once the conference season gets started these conferences wont get the stuffing beat out of them by the power conferences.

Pac-12: Another great weekend for the PAC-12 this past weekend. The only losses the conference had were Nevada beating Washington State and USC beat Stanford. The USC vs. Stanford game was everything it was hyped up to be. But even though it was a great game, both teams looked really sloppy with turnovers and costly penalties. UCLA put another scare in this week for the second week in a row. The big win of the weekend came in Eugene with Oregon over Michigan State. The Ducks had a scare put in to them when MSU went on a 20-0 run, but after that Oregon came to life and started pulling away.

SEC: Another near perfect weekend for the SEC, with the only loss coming in conference. But with this being said, it is time to officially put Vanderbilt on the possible winless season watch. They suck. There’s no other way to put it. Do I think they will go 0-12? No, not at all. I think Vanderbilt will beat UMASS this weekend, Charleston Southern, and Old Dominion. The SEC should be ashamed Vanderbilt is in the conference right now.

Independents: The independents went 4-0 this weekend with 3 huge wins. BYU creamed Texas, Navy outplayed Temple, and Notre Dame took Michigan to the woodshed.

Conference Rankings:

  1. SEC- Start up the SEC chats y’all
  2. Pac-12- East Coasters need to start staying up late to watch the Pac-12. They might be the best conference in football at the end of the year.
  3. ACC- Tough to argue with a conference that beats Ohio State and they only loss was an in-conference loss.
  4. Independents- Too bad this actually isn’t a conference.
  5. Big 12- The Big 12 would be higher if it wasn’t for Texas. Horns down.
  6. Big Ten- One bad weekend doesn’t mean they are a bad conference.
  7. Conference USA- Cupcake round 1
  8. Mountain West- Cupcake round 2
  9. Sun Belt- Cupcake round 3
  10. MAC- Cupcake round 4
  11. American- The American can’t get much worse

BOLD (AND STUPID) PREDICTIONS IN REVIEW

Well it wasn’t a great weekend when it came to the Bold (And Stupid) predictions.

I said UTSA would beat Arizona by 10 on Thursday, but that did not happen. Arizona won by 3 in a game that could have gone either way.

My next prediction was that Northwestern, Purdue, or Iowa would lose ugly this weekend. I’m pretty proud of this prediction actually because Purdue and Northwestern lost and it was ugly. Iowa barley squeaked by Ball State, so this was a god prediction.

My next prediction wasn’t half bad either, considering it was only half right. I said that the MAC would beat 2 Big Ten teams and 1 SEC team. The MAC did have 2 wins over the Big Ten, but lost 2 games to the SEC. You’re letting me down Ohio and Toledo.

My final two predictions did not go as well. I said that South Carolina would lose to East Carolina, but that didn’t happen. I also said Florida State would beat The Citadel by 55. I’m disappointed that this one didn’t come true. The Noles had some sympathy I guess.
